Osprey Farpoint vs Tortuga Setout
The Osprey Farpoint is a decent choice for a travel backpack, but it misses the mark in a few key items -- ones that you’ll spot minutes into your shortest weekend getaway.
What Packing Space?
Osprey Farpoint measures a measly 20” x 12” x 8”. Compare that to the Setout travel backpack’s measurements of 22” x 14” x 9”.
You’ll see there’s a couple inches difference between the two, with Tortuga being slightly bigger.
So what does that mean in the real world?
You’re not maxing all your available space in your carry on. So your packing time takes longer because you’re forced to make the hard decisions of what not to bring.
We’re all for packing light. But we at Tortuga believe that minimalism doesn’t need to equal long hours agonizing over what to pack. Only to end up packing your small bag to the max, leaving you with no room to bring home souvenirs or other treasures from your adventures.
Instead, we believe you should use all the carry on space available to you. That’s why we designed Tortuga Setout to be the full carry on size allowed by most airlines.
Lacks Internal Organization
The Osprey Farpoint has a “large panel zip access to main compartment.”
However, that main compartment boasts a big fat zero in terms of internal organization. It’s one big open space of chaos waiting to happen.
No internal pockets to keep you organized on the road. Just two big areas: one zippered pouch on the flap and a larger, main compartment. Perfect breeding ground for unorganization and countless minutes wasted trying to find clean socks.
The Setout travel backpack keeps you organized with the flap split into two handy zippered mesh pouches.
Keep clean shirts in one, and dirty laundry in another. Or organize those flaps however best suits your needs. Like casual clothes in one, and professional shirts in the other.
Meaning you can find what you’re looking for and adventure faster, with less cursed struggling with your backpack. Isn’t that your ideal travel world?
Did you know that a high-quality, padded hip belt transfers 80% of your bag’s weight to your hips, saving your shoulders from tight, headache-inducing knots?
Until you’re carrying a full backpack, you don’t realize a hip belt’s true magic.
Points to Osprey for adding a hip belt to the Farpoint. But that flimsy hip belt won’t transfer enough of your bag’s weight to even make a difference.
On the other hand, Tortuga Setout has full-weight bearing hip belt. So your hips carry the full 80% of your bag’s weight. Meaning your shoulders feel light and fancy-free.
Speaking of your shoulders, they’re fragile creatures which is why we made our shoulder straps from injection molded foam. That’s the same foam used in the soles of your favorite running shoes. Over time, that foam breaks in -- in the best way possible -- and conforms to the shape of your body.
How does the Osprey Farpoint’s shoulder straps compare?
We wish we could tell you. When describing their shoulder straps, Osprey only says this: “Smooth mesh covered atilon foam provides a comfortable, breathable contact surface.”
No info on how those shoulder straps feel against your shoulders. Or how they’ll conform to your body over time.
No Reachable Pockets
Osprey claims that the Farpoint is “perfect for a weekend getaway in the city.”
Maybe so, but we haven’t met a weekend adventurer who doesn’t appreciate reachable pockets on their bag. We’re talking easily-accessible side or hip belt pockets.
At Tortuga, we love weekend getaways. Because of that, we know which details on a backpack make a huge difference. We have gone through enough airport security lines to understand the necessity of quickly accessing a passport, or boarding pass.
The backpack designers at Osprey clearly haven’t.
The Setout has two convenient hip belt pockets and one lie-flat water bottle pocket that you can reach while wearing the bag. The zippered hip belt pockets can be used to safely store small items like cash, coins, and boarding passes.
If you’re buying a snack at an airport kiosk or standing in line at immigration, you won’t have to wrangle with your backpack to reach your money or passport. It’s within finger’s reach, meaning you have more time to enjoy your coffee at your gate.
